Camouflage
Extatosoma – Tiaratum is perfectly disguised as dry gum leaves.

One of the most impressive masters of deception is the Australian spiny leaf insect (Extatosoma – Tiaratum). It is perfectly disguised as chewed gum leaves. Its legs resemble, in colour and shape, half eaten gum leaves. It stands very still on leaves and sways from side to side when the wind blows as if to mimic the behaviour of leaves moving in the breeze. The female of this species has very small wings which are useless for flying.

One very potent deterent to any would be predator is its brilliant mimcry of a scorpion. When threatened, it curls up its tail and stands perfectly still resembling a scorpion.
